The weekend is upon us (yeah!) and I am curious … which of these new films will you be catching?
It looks like we are headed for yet another weekend at the box office with some potentially entertaining choices; I have narrowed the selection down to what I consider are the “big three” openings in movie theaters nationwide.

I’m curious of all three. I remember fondly the BIG MIRACLE story being covered extensively on TV news in ’88 and it really captivated me and many across the globe. One of my friends (and the parent of a schoolmate of my daughter) is really looking forward to CHRONICLE and wants me to join him when he goes. But the sure thing is THE WOMAN IN BLACK. It’ll be interesting to see you-know-who not as Harry Potter, and see how filmmakers remade the old British novel, stage-play, and the chilling ’89 movie. Hope they do it justice and not revert to cheap jump scare tactics to ‘modernize’ that spine-tingling, slow-burn gem of a ghost story.

I feel like a ditz … I do not remember Big Miracle at all.
36 reviews in and Rottentomoatoes.com has 89% rating. Looks like it may be on its way to being certified fresh.
The Woman in Black looks a right fright.

Big Miracle looks so cheesy it made me cringe every time I saw the trailer in theater. Chronicle looks like a nice rental and The Woman in Black as well. I don’t really have the urge to see any of those movies in theater ah!
This weekend, I will probably just check out Contagion which I just received on Netflix!
iluvcinema says
We just received Contagion here too 🙂
I am kind of interested in The Woman in Black.
But I think I will spend this weekend watching The Shadow Line (Scott at Front Room Cinema recommended it to me).
Scott Lawlor says
Ah Shadow Line… cool!!
iluvcinema says
Only taking your rec, Scott 🙂 I started to watch a couple of minutes of it but the business of life took over and I had to postpone it until I got some spare time.

Will not be watching any of the above ones, but am going to a festival on Sunday. Will be watching 5 movies from early in the morning to late in the evening. They are showing: Albert Nobbs, A Dangerous Method, Intouchables, Headhunters and Shame. Looking forward to watching them!
iluvcinema says
Awesome. I have only seen two of the five listed – the Fassbender dbl bill. Enjoy and I will be looking out in your space for your reaction.
Happy Weekend!

I saw Big Miracle last weekend at a press screening. I have been under embargo until now… But i really enjoyed it… yes it is cheesy, but it is a nice story.
Chronicle is on my list for the coming week for sure
iluvcinema says
An embargo for Big Miracle? That is interesting …

Hi, iluv and company:
I got my film fix late Thursday night courtesy if TCM.
Started with ‘The Professionals’: Lee Marvin, Burt Lancaster, Woody Strode and Robert Ryan go south of the post Pancho Villa border to rescue Ralph Bellamy’s wife, Claudia Cardinale from Jack Palance. A great companion piece to ‘The Magnificent Seven’.
Followed by ‘The Treasure of the Sierra Madre’. A great dissertation on Gold Fever with Humphrey Bogart, Tim Holt, Bruce Bennett and Walter Huston under Walter’s son, John’s direction.
Topped off by Peckinpah’s ‘The Wild Bunch’. A great film about the decline of the Wild West due to changing times. With William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, Ben Johnson and Warren Oates at the tops of their games!
PS: Also have guest reviews at ‘Flix Chatter’ and ‘FRC’ you might enjoy.

That’s a fantastic set of westerns, Kevin. I actually got to re-watch THE PROFESSIONALS last month at The Autry Museum on a great 35mm print. They have a month series going. This month, it’s the THE WILD BUNCH which we’ll be seeing (next week, in fact). I always enjoy your guest reviews on Flixchatter and FRC, as well.
iluvcinema says
I will be on the lookout for your reviews 🙂

Well I ended up skipping the new releases and caught up on some Oscar noms I haven’t seen yet. The Descendants was really good, I think it’s one of my favorite George Clooney’s roles.

Good stuff. Nothing happened on this end unfortunately I had my Netflix queue ready and fired up to go!
