“Captain Marvel” Trailer is Dope, But Who is She?

Intro

If you are like me, you are probably still ‘marveling’ (pun intended) over the trailer that dropped yesterday for Marvel Studio’s forthcoming Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson.

Here is the trailer again just because … awesome:

As a reminder, we got a hint of her existence in the MCU in the post-credits sequence title in Avengers: Infinity War. This was an ‘appearance’ which took me two viewings and a conversation with my comic book-aficionado younger brother before I ‘kind of” got it.

New phone, who dis?

What bits of information my brother did divulge still did not wholly prepare me for what was to come yesterday. Based on the trailer, it really looks like the MCU is teeing us up for a full-fledged, proper origin story. But the question still lingers … who is she?

So without giving away too much, I did a little digging around (i.e. talked to my brother) and put together this primer for what I think we should know ahead of the release of Marvel’s first female-headlining cinematic outing in the 10 years of the Studio’s existence.

Photo Stills from Upcoming Oliver Stone Crime-Drama “Savages”

Here are a couple of stills for the upcoming Oliver Stone film, Savages.

Three-time Oscar®-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone returns to the screen with the ferocious thriller Savages, featuring the all-star ensemble cast of Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, Emile Hirsch and Demian Bichir. The film is based on Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel that was named one of The New York Times’ Top 10 Books of 2010.

Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry–raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them.

Savages will drop in cinemas on July 6, 2012.

Photo Stills from “The Host”

Check out these still from the upcoming (in 2013) film The Host (photo credit: Alan Markfield).

Based on the Stephenie Meyer (Twilight series) novel of the same name, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Jake Abel, William Hurt, Diane Kruger and Frances Fisher.

For those (like me) unfamiliar with the story, here is a synopsis (courtesy of Open Road Films):

Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), one of the few remaining “wild” humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading “soul” who has been given Melanie’s body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories.

But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

Hope that does not give too much away …

The Host is directed by Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) and is scheduled for release on March 29th, 2013.
